MANILA (UPDATE) – Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada on Monday said the city government will be suspending the implementation of the expanded truck ban for 8 days.
Estrada told reporters at the Manila City Hall that the suspension of the truck ban is in view of the upcoming World Economic Forum on East Asia on May 21 to 23. The Philippines is the host of this year's forum.
Estrada said Secretary to the Cabinet Jose Rene Almendras and Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson requested the moratorium on the truck ban.
Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, the city's traffic czar, said the suspension of the truck ban will begin tomorrow, May 13.
The truck ban has been described by truckers as oppressive, but the city government is not willing to drop the controversial traffic ordinance.
Asked about the reason behind the suspension, Moreno said, ''Mayroon naman siguro silang (national government) gustong subukan na ibang pamamaraan o pag-aaral na gagawin ang mga ahensya ng gobyerno kung saan ilalatag naman laaht ng truck ulit.
''Siguro sa darating na panahon may mga pag-aaral ang national government, but we in the local government unit, is firm that this will only be implemented for one week."
Under the city's expanded truck ban, trucks with a gross weight of above 4,500 kilograms will only be allowed on city streets from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day except on Saturdays and Sundays, with a window period of seven hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
